Some published music has some of the notes enclosed in brackets to indicate that they are not always used. An example of this is shown above. The fourth beat of Bar 1 is sung in Verse 1 but in Verse 2 it's treated as a rest.
Is there any way of replicating this in Capella 9 (I can't find any way of adding brackets to notes)? If it CAN be done, is the playback system then clever enough to only sound the note when it has a lyric syllable associated with it?
Knowing that you can have a different tempo between the first and second time when a passage is played, I was hoping that that also applied to note properties - with the ability to selectively mute some of the notes - but this doesn't work! If I mute a note for the second time, it is also muted for the first time!
Does anyone have any ideas about how to achieve the desired effect?

Da ich weiß, dass man beim ersten und zweiten Mal, wenn eine Passage gespielt wird, ein anderes Tempo haben kann, hoffte ich, dass dies auch für die Noteneigenschaften gilt – mit der Möglichkeit, einige der Noten selektiv stummzuschalten – aber das funktioniert nicht! Wenn ich eine Note zum zweiten Mal stummschalte, ist sie auch beim ersten Mal stummgeschaltet!

That solves the notation part of the problem very nicely. But that still leaves the playhback problem. Is there any way of only playing the bracketed note when there is a lyric syllable associated with it - or of selectively muting notes depending on first/second time, etc.?

There is no such feature to control the volume as it exists for the tempo. This feature was requested several times. Maybe in the furture.
